What is Automatic Drawing?

It is when the pen is allowed to move of its own accord across the paper free from conscious thought or mind. In some cases, my drawings are created with one continuous line usually finishing from where the line first started.

Automatic drawing is recognised in its own right as an art form by the Tate Gallery and several famous artists have experimented with automatic drawing such as Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Andre Masson, and Max Ernst. Even Sigmund Freud – the renowned psychoanalyst – used automatic drawing to explore the minds of his patients.

Where does Automatic Drawing come from?

That is the 64 thousand dollar question.

I am by no means a natural artist. I can’t draw a bowl of fruit or draw a portrait, abstract or not, but what I can do is pick up a pen and allow my hand to move free from thought or mind and every now and again create, in my opinion, wonderful awe-inspiring automatic drawings which interestingly speak to different people in different ways.
